Spelling and the Core Curriculum: Progression in phonics

Now that we are armed with the basics of the phonetics and phonology of English, and have some familiarity with the IPA transcription system, I would next like to consider how this underpinning knowledge can support the delivery of phonics in the classroom.

As already mentioned, this is not a book on how to teach phonics as such, but it is important to relate phonetic knowledge to the planning and delivery of a progression in phonics.

Rather than single out any particular phonics scheme or framework as the structure for this chapter, I shall take the requirements of the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum, accessed online at: www.excellencegateway.org.uk/sflcurriculum, as my starting point for a discussion of some of the issues involved.

However the relationship between reading and writing is viewed, it is good practice to use writing to reinforce reading, and vice versa. We shall start by looking at the Core Curriculum’s guidelines for writing, although there are places where it seems that phonics for reading and phonics for spelling are not always clearly distinguished. A phonics approach for spelling was a strategy used by teachers in the Phonics Project with learners up to Level 2.
